HOW STRESS AFFECTS HAIR LOSS

While shedding hair is the most natural thing for new hairs to grow in place of old ones, excessive hair loss can be a cause of concern, sometimes causing thinning or even baldness. There may be a number of reasons why a person losses excess hair, however, one would agree that stress-related hair loss is one of the most common these days.ntation.

With hectic lifestyles, demanding jobs and personal relationships, one cannot escape the vicious circle of stress. Stress and anxiety can have an adverse effect on the health of your hair, causing them to grey prematurely or fall out excessively. While the exact reason and connection between stress and hair loss is debatable, it is always wise to see a doctor is you see excessive hair loss and are stressed for whatever reason.

Severe mental and physical stress for prolonged periods of time have their side effects, and most of the time these effects are manifested in hair loss, degradation in the quality of hair, or graying before time. Many studies have in fact shown that stress can induce telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. Telogen effluvium is the less severe one from the two, wherein the hair stops growing and lies dormant. These types of dormant hair will fall out within a couple of months. However, it is likely to grow back within 6 to 9 months. So, Telogen effluvium is usually temporary and one can recover from the same without much effort.

Alopecia areata, on the other hand, involves a white blood cell attack on the hair follicles causing them to fall out within weeks. This fall out occurs in patches, and can be partial or involve the whole head. This type of pattern baldness is very rampart, and unfortunately, the lost hair will not grow back on its own without surgical intervention or treatment. For treating alopecia areata or pattern baldness, one can contact a skilled hair transplant surgeon, and undergo surgery to induce the growth of new, natural hairs.

However, even with the treatment, one needs to take into account that further stress may affect the transplanted hair too and thus, a change in lifestyle is a must. Meditation, yoga, breathing exercises etc. may be of help since stress not only affects your hair but your overall well-being. If one is stress, it affects the mind and the body, and hair fall is its most obvious symptom. Thus, without arresting stress, one cannot aim to arrest hair fall.
