We talk incessantly about how beneficial hair transplant treatments are, but rarely do we know how exactly the procedure is performed. Due to this ignorance, people end up choosing an unskilled surgeon and undergoing a surgery that may not give them the best results due to the inexperience of their doctor. However, when equipped with the knowledge of how the surgery is performed, and what to expect from your doctor, one can make the right choice and see a positive change in their life!.
Hair transplant surgery, as the name suggests, is a surgical procedure and is only done under local anesthetic to reduce the pain to the point of not being there at all. To begin with, hair transplantation surgery involves the removal of a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the patient's head, and transplanting it to fill an area with little or no hair. Thus your own hair from one location of the head is transplanted onto another, and so there is no risk of unnatural-looking hair.
Your surgeon will inform you beforehand about the estimated time taken for the surgery. In preparation for the surgery, the doctor will clean and sanitise the scalp, and administer a local anesthetic to the area from where the grafts will be prepared. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the surgeon will remove a 3-4 inch piece of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head. A graft, in simple terms, is a tiny piece of this hair-bearing scalp that has been removed. Once the area from where there scalp is removed has been sewn shut, the surgeon will prepare the grafts, cutting the scalp piece into the required number of pieces for transplantation.
Depending upon the intensity of the baldness, and the desired results, the grafts will be prepared. The grafts are carefully and delicately inserted into hair follicles, or the tiny holes from where hair takes root. Once the area to be transplanted is injected with the anesthetic, the surgeon will painstakingly insert the grafts into the holes; at times, multiple hairs, and at time, one hair at a time. This marks the completion of the surgery. From this point onwards, with some basic care, the patient will recover in about 5 days, and the results will start to show in a few weeks. After the transplant, in a few days, the transplanted hair goes through a phase of shedding. This ensures that new hair will take root in the place of these transplanted hairs.
Though there are minor risks involved, which one should be aware of, under the care of an expert hair transplant surgeon the risk of infection is considerably reduced, and scars can be easily concealed once completely healed using SMP or scalp-micro pigmentation, or other treatments.
