Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition in which there is patchy hair loss of the scalp. If left untreated may lead to total hair loss or alopecia totalis. The actual cause of alopecia areata is unknown. About 1 in 5 people with this condition may have a family history of alopecia. By expert studies it is thought to be an autoimmune condition. This usually occurs when the immune system of body mistakenly attacks and damages healthy body tissue. Alopecia areata has no age and sex factor and usually seen in men , women and children in same ratio. Few studies also proved that it may occur after a major life event such as illness, stress , pregnancy or trauma. Hair loss is usually the chief complaint . But few people may also fill a burning sensation or itching . Alopecia Areata usually begins as one to two patches of hair loss. Hair loss is usually seen on the scalp. It may also occur on the beard region, eyebrows, pubic region, arms or legs in some people. But cosmetically challenged are scalp , eyebrows, moustache, beard region.It is also called " spot baldness" . if left untreated in 1-2 % of cases this condition can spread to the entire scalp and lead to alopecia totalis or to the entire epidermis called as alopecia universalis . Alopecia Areata involves hair loss in one or more round patches on the scalp. Normally single or double patches can be treated by medicine like steroids and minoxidil. But it's a long term treatment and about result it may vary from person to person .ILS (INTRA LESIONAL STEROID) like triamcinolone acetate can be injected into the lesion for 6 months every one month apart. Alopecia Areata Multilocularis refer to multiple areas of bald patches . Patches on beard is know as Alopecia Areata Barbae. Hair loss all over the scalp is called Alopecia Totalis. If all the body hair including axillary and pubic is lost than it is called as Alopecia Universalis. Alopecia Areata is not contagious. Topical clobestasol is also effective . Some other medications are also used like anthralin or topical coal tar , topical immunotherapy cyclosporine , dithenylcyclopropenone etc.
